Curriculum

Maths

In the Mathematics department at Goldwyn we try to develop the students own thinking skills and make students realise that maths is an important life skill to have.

In the classroom we seek to create a supportive learning environment. We know that different learners require a different and an individual approach to help them progress with their learning; so we make use of a variety of ways to help. We make the learning both kinaesthetic and visual.  We try to get them to learn through discovering for themselves.

It’s really encouraging to see that as many of our students become more confident with their maths that they start to enjoy helping each other; and this leads on to helping them with their social development. We know that students learn at their own speeds and we have a daily dialog with most of our students that will inform us of their needs which then enables us to show them their next steps to progress in their maths. .

Additionally, we have lots of software; for example MyMaths and SAM Learning, that students can access at home and in school to support their learning. We also make homemade calculators, giant protractors, as well as making origami, puzzles and games with real-life materials to engage students and help them learn in the way that best supports their needs.

Our gifted and talented students in mathematics are supported so by broadening their curriculum as well as more challenging work.  We continuously make links across the curriculum for example how maths ideas may support Science. Alongside class time we have a variety of extracurricular activities; such as juggling, chess club and puzzles and games that support our gifted and talented students as well as students who need reinforced.

By the time students reach Key stage 4 we offer a wide range of qualifications: starting with Level 1and 2 in Number and Measure and Level 1 in Statistics and then on to GCSE.
